Inge, William Ralph

Inge, William Ralph
(1860–1954)
   Popular Theologian and Devotional Writer.
Inge was born in Yorkshire and was educated at the University of Cambridge. He had a successful career within the Church of England, becoming Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at Cambridge in 1907, and he was Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral from 1911 to 1934. His works included Christian Mysticism, Personal Idealism and Mysticism and Faith and its Psychology. Platonic in outlook, he was best known for his series of Outspoken Essays in which he defined God as the ‘supreme value’ and faith as ‘belief in the reality of absolute value’. He also contributed a regular, but not always cheerful, column to a London newspaper and was thus perhaps the most widely read churchman of his generation.
